About SofistiKateIt: Meet the Creator

Hi! I’m Kate, the retired spirit behind this digital studio and exploration of Niagara and beyond blog. While I live in the heart of the beautiful Niagara Region, for many years, my view of it was limited to what I could see from my car window on the way to work.

The Busy Years

Before retiring in 2023, my life was a whirlwind of activity. I spent almost 40 years in the workforce, beginning with my younger days behind the wheel for a family transport business. I was responsible for steel runs for industry giants like Dofasco and Stelco, as well as navigating routes that took me across the border as well as up north in Ontario.

Later, I spent many dedicated years in the Environmental Department—a back-breaking, high-demanding job—just how I liked it! Unfortunately, it eventually took a toll on my back. Between the demands of that career and the responsibilities of raising two kids, I simply never had the time to explore the physical world in depth as much as I wanted.

However, while my career was defined by physical labour, my curious mind was always working. Even during those busy years, I was teaching myself HTML and design—always curious about "how to do this or that" in the digital world. I’ve been actively designing and creating since 2008:

- That's 8 years after Google went live
- 7 years after Wikipedia was launched
- 3 years after YouTube started streaming video to the masses
- 2 years after Facebook was open to everyone 13+ and...
- The same year Twitter was born!

All those years of late-night curiosity and learning finally led me to become a completely self-taught digital creator.

A New Chapter of Discovery

Now that I’ve happily embraced retirement, I’ve finally given my body a break and my creative side a chance to shine. I am now on a mission to discover the world I missed out on during those busy decades. My blog is a mix of research, adventure, and creation:
  • The Research: I spend hours researching online to uncover "hidden" facts, like the 30km subterranean labyrinth of the Toronto PATH—which, OMG, I never even knew existed all these years!—or the "Limestone Titans" of the Ghost Canals. In the spirit of transparency, I’ll sometimes use an AI tool to help me sift through the mountain of information I find and organize my initial notes. However, I’m always the one in the driver’s seat—double-checking the key facts and fine-tuning the details to make sure everything is just right before it reaches you.
  • The Experience: When I do get out to explore, I bring my camera - my iPhone now, but "back in the day," you’d always find me with a "real" camera in hand! (lol)! You can see my personal snapshots of places I’ve visited over on my NIAGARA EH! page.
  • The Creations: I take my research, my "Visions," and my curiosity for a wide range of subjects and turn them into the high-resolution digital art you’ll find in my SOFISTIKATEIT Etsy Shop. From Einstein bookmarks and local landmarks to calendars and coloring books, it’s a collection of everything I’m passionate about creating.

what then is an empty desk a sign of?"

A Studio of Diverse Creations

In my digital studio, I believe in quality over speed. Every item I create—whether it's a high-resolution print or a practical tool—is designed to be versatile and user-friendly. My shop is strictly digital, offering products you can use immediately online or download to print at home, including:
  • Printable Posters & Wall Art: High-resolution designs like my "Niagara Falls Facts" collection, perfect for home decor.
  • Planners & Educational Charts: Practical tools including multiplication/division bundles and holiday organizers.
  • Photo & Digital Overlays: My specialty! From "Strictly Noir" frames to seasonal pumpkin and holiday bundles, these are designed to add a professional, creative layer to your own photos.
  • Clipart & Creative Assets: Specialized graphics for pregnancy announcements, scrapbooking, and seasonal crafts.
Whether you are here for the deep-dive history facts or to find a unique digital download, I’m so glad you’ve joined me for this journey. It’s not a race—it’s about finally getting to see the world, one post and one design at a time.

Thank you for being here! πŸ’•
